Winner of the 3rd Golden Rooster Awards for Best Director, Best Music and Best Supporting Actress in 1983, the film was selected as China's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 56th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
Synopsis
Le film montre la société et la vie à Pékin dans les années 1920 à travers les yeux d'une fillette de 6 ans. Yingzi Lin quitte Taiwan pour Pékin avec ses parents. Ils habitent dans une ruelle au sud de la ville. En tant que fille énergique mais sensible, elle passe beaucoup de temps avec ses amis. Ils courent dans les rues et les ruelles animées et regardent beaucoup les gens.Acteurs

During the time the "Gang of Four” is on the rampage in China, a poet named Qiu Shi who has been in prison for 6 years is secretly transferred from Sichuan to Wuhan by boat under the guard of Li Yan and Liu Wenying. They meet six passengers on the boat – a poor girl named Xing Hua who had to work as a prostitute to pay her debts, a just woman teacher, an old actor of Beijing Opera, a frail elderly woman who has just lost her son, a young worker who has a clear stand on what to love and what to hate, and a little girl in rags. One night, feeling hopeless about her life, Xin Hua commits suicide by jumping into the river. Qiu Shi saves her and uses his own experience to encourage the poor girl. All the people aboard are deeply moved by this brave poet, including Li Yan and Liu Wenying. It turns out that the girl in rags is Qiu Shi’s daughter. With the help of the passengers aboard, Qiu Shi with his daughter finally regain freedom.

Au IIIe siècle av. J.-C., Ying Zheng, héritier du royaume de Qin, cherche à dominer les six autres royaumes. Sa stratégie semble imparable. Il envoie sa concubine, Dame Zhao, comme espionne au royaume de Yan et la charge d'y engager un assassin pour tenter de le tuer et pouvoir déclarer la guerre au Yan. Dame Zhao persuade l'assassin, du nom de Jing Ke et dont elle est tombée amoureuse, d'accomplir ce geste. Toutefois, après avoir été témoin du massacre sanglant des enfants du royaume voisin de Zhao — dont elle est originaire — ordonné par Ying, elle se retourne contre lui, prête allégeance au Yan et les aide dans leur tentative d'assassinat de Ying. Celle-ci échoue et Jing Ke est tué de la main même de Ying. Zhao revient ensuite au Qin afin de ramener le corps de Jing et l'enterrer au Yan. Le film couvre une grande partie de la vie de Ying Zheng, de ses débuts comme otage jusqu'à sa domination sur toute la Chine.

İlyas (Kadir İnanır) is a truck driver from İstanbul who comes to a remote village to work in the construction of a dam. When his truck gets stuck in the muddy dirt road, he comes across Asya (Türkan Şoray), a woman from the village who he nicknames Al Yazmalım ('red scarf'). They fall in love, get married and have a child called Samet. One day İlyas stops to help some stranded bystanders, but in doing so, he is delayed and ends up getting fired. When Asya goes to his boss and pleads for İlyas to be reinstated, İlyas is enraged and hits her, then leaves her to start an affair with his former casual girlfriend Dilek (Hülya Tuğlu). When İlyas realises his mistake, he goes back only to find that Asya and his child have left the house. Asya and Samet are wandering by the road when they hitchhike on the back of a truck with a kind stranger Cemşit (Ahmet Mekin). After Cemşit realises that Asya has nowhere to go, he takes pity on them and offers them food and shelter while İlyas searches desperately for them. Samet becomes increasingly fond of Cemşit and Asya begins to see that Samet thinks of him as a father. Then one day after many years, İlyas suddenly appears and Asya is left to make a choice between him and Cemşit.
