The plot revolves around the early days of the Communist Party in Kerala. Three Comrades, Nettoor Stephen (Mohanlal), T.K. Antony (Murali) and Sethulakshmi (Geetha) work tirelessly to empower the daily wage laborers and other proletarians of their village, to end the reign of feudal landlords, in the days when Communism was illegal to practice. Sethu and Antony are in love with each other, as are Nettooran and Annamma (Annakkutty), the daughter of Medayil Ittichan, the landlord whose press Nettooran runs, as his day job.

Rishi, jeune ingénieur citadin, opte pour un mariage arrangé avec une villageoise, Senbagam. Lors de leur rencontre, au cours d'un des rares moments de relative intimité, Senbagam supplie Rishi de refuser ce mariage car elle en aime un autre. Elle n'ose l'avouer à sa famille, terriblement fière et honorée par cet éventuel mariage. Alors que Rishi doit faire part de sa décision face à toute la famille, il croise le regard de Roja, la jeune sœur de Senbagam, et annonce que c'est elle qu'il veut épouser. Le monde de Roja s'écroule. En effet, elle a toujours affirmé qu'elle ne se marierait pas et ferait des études. De plus elle se sent coupable, croyant avoir volé le fiancé de sa sœur. Dans ces conditions les débuts du jeune couple sont difficiles, mais cela s'arrange et tous deux partent pour le Cachemire où Rishi doit effectuer une mission pour l'armée. Leur bonheur ne semble pas connaître de limite dans cette région magnifique, quand soudain la réalité les rattrape : Rishi est enlevé par un groupe d'indépendantistes qui veut l'échanger contre leur leader emprisonné.

Obligé de fuir Thoothukudi, pour des raisons politiques et surtout, après avoir abattu un policier, meurtrier de son père, un activiste, le jeune Vélou (Kamal Hassan) finit par échouer à Bombay, dans un bidonville tamoul. Là, un vieux pêcheur musulman le prend sous son aile et lui apprend les ficelles du métier. En grandissant, Vélou prend conscience des brimades et des injustices faites à sa communauté. Il décide d'y mettre un terme, le jour où, il supprime, dans le sang et la violence, un représentant de l'ordre corrompu et à l'origine de tous les malheurs. Il devient dès lors, Vélou-Nayagar, le "parrain-justicier" pour ses compatriotes, les protégeant, face à toutes formes d'injustice, durant plusieurs décennies, tel un ange exterminateur.. Le héros finira par se brûler les ailes.

Unnikrishan (Vijayakumar), a simple, innocent, easy going chap joins Government Law College. He along with first year students are ragged by the seniors under the leadership of Pappan (Ashokan). A student leader with strong political clout, Pappan violently thrashes down Unnikrishnan who opposes the ragging. Later again, he is insulted in front of the girls. Hindustan Colony, lying on the suburbs of the city, is a typical Indian city side colony, populated mainly with middle-class and lower-class people who are busy with their own day-to-day issues. The problem of drinking water had been a serious cause, which had been neglected by the ruling class for several years. Goplakrishnan (Jagadish), a resident of the colony is an educated youth, who works as a newspaper boy. Along with his bunch of friends Gopalakrishnan is active in all cultural activities. He is in love with Gowri, daughter of Poomukhath Kurup (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), a corrupted business contractor, who is also his uncle. It was the callousness of Kurup that led to the death of the father of Gopalakrishnan, which has made him a bitter enemy of Kurupp. In the mean time, politics is in turmoil in the state.
