Athirathram is a 1984 Malayalam crime film directed by I.V. Sasi which is the highest grossing movie of that year. The film's central character is Tharadas (portrayed by Mammootty) re-appears in Sasi's 2006 film Balram vs. Taradas. Character of Tharadas is based on life of smuggler.

Synopsis

Tharadas is a ruthless smuggler whose uncle was murdered by Rajesh. Rajesh is married to Thulasi who has dark past with Tharadas. Tharadas's cousin kills Rajesh and accuses Tharadas of the murder. Rajesh's partner Prasad and Thulasi get revenge on Tharadas, and Tharadas kills Chandu in turn.

The film opens with an illegal cockfighting competition held in a small village in central Kerala. Suddenly police enters in to the field and arrests Shivan (Mammootty), and Suku (Lalu Alex) for holding money betting. But on way, they are saved by village youths under Chellan (Bharath Gopi), a local goon, who is also a close buddy of Shivan. Both Chellan and Shivan share a strong friendship and are more like brothers. Shivan is in love with Chellan's younger sister (Seema) and Chellan and his mom have given green signal to it. Chandri ( Urvashi), the sister of Shivan, is his everything and his whole happiness revolves around her. Bhadran (Mohanlal), the younger brother of Chellan is too aggressive like him and picks up fight for every silly reasons. Its usually Shivan, who sorts out the fights that he picks up every day. Things are going very smoothy until one day Chandri gets pregnant. Chandri, in order to pacify Shivan reveals him that it is Chellan, who is responsible for this, whereas it was Thampi, her neighbor who was actually responsible. Shivan, in a sudden rage kills Chellan and surrenders at police station himself. Bhadran, but turns violent by this incident and vows to take revenge.

It is a political film on trade union and its functioning in factories. The story revolves a trade union and company owner. She brings new manager Mohan Cheriyan (Mohanlal) to solve the company issues with trade union leaders. When the company was about to lay off due to union problems, Raghavan (Mammootty)suggest a new formula for solving the company issues and this leads to save the company. finally Raghavan was killed by his own men. Karunan (Mammootty) an arrogant fisherman is back from jail after 5 years. Upon arriving back at his coastal village, he finds much change in the scenario. Chandran (Rahman), his trusted Lieutenant, who is more like a younger brother is now a worker at the nearby toddy shop. Chandran again joins him and helps Karunan in setting up his life. Karunan is shocked to see that Madhavi(Menaka), whom he loved once is now married to Kumaran (Vincent), for whom he had to go to jail. Kumaran ditched Karunan and within a short time, he himself has emerged as a rich man in the locality. Karunan decides to avenge Kumaran, but is attacked severely at night by his goons. Karunan is saved by Gopi (Mohanlal), a jobless youngman who accidentally witnesses the incident. Gopi becomes a good friend of Karunan and started staying with him and Chandran. In the meantime Devayani (Seema) a young woman also joins them due to unaccepted situations. The unpleasant incidents that happening in each of their life and Karunan's fight against Kumaran forms the rest of the story.
