Au cinéma, Wanda Hendrix contribue à vingt-six films (majoritairement américains, dont des westerns), le premier étant Agent secret d'Herman Shumlin (avec Charles Boyer et Lauren Bacall), sorti en 1945. Suivent notamment Et tournent les chevaux de bois de Robert Montgomery (1947, avec le réalisateur et Andrea King), Échec à Borgia d'Henry King (1949, avec Tyrone Power et Orson Welles), Le Dénonciateur de Mitchell Leisen (1950, avec Alan Ladd et Francis Lederer), Sierra d'Alfred E. Green (1950, avec Audie Murphy et Burl Ives), My Outlaw Brother d'Elliot Nugent (1951, avec Mickey Rooney et Robert Stack), et Au sud d'Alger de Jack Lee (film britannique, 1953, avec Van Heflin et Eric Portman). The fairly straightforward love/betrayal/sacrifice theme of the Noyes poem is expanded to fill out the demands of an 82 minute long film. The Highwayman himself is an aristocrat who leads a party of associates to hold up the well-to-do and distribute their takings to the needy. This campaign is broadened when they discover that innocents are being kidnapped and sold into slavery in the colonies. The finale however follows the poem more closely as the Highwayman is betrayed to the authorities, soldiers march to set an ambush, his lover Bess sacrifices herself to give warning and the hero is shot down on the highway as he gallops to take revenge.
