Mr. Mishra has had an illustrious 30 year career with his work recognised by the Government of India by him receiving three National Awards from the President of India, as well as Ordres de Artes et Lettres by the French Government (equivalent to knighthood). He was one of the pioneers of the alternative independent cinema movement in India in the 1980s and he is one of the few directors from that era who has still managed to remain contemporary.

The film follows real-time stories of actors, directors and cinema viewers in four different countries. In Tunisia, a documentary film director struggles to have his frank film about human sexuality be seen in their conservative culture. In India, a young actress struggles with the challenges of making a name for herself while dealing with racist barriers. And in Scotland, actress Tilda Swinton and filmmaker Mark Cousins, create a film festival that travels to audiences rather than having the audiences come to the festival. These stories jump back and forth as the narratives develop, interspersed with scenes from video stores, projection booths and homes of all kinds. Toward the end of film there are brief commentaries by Indian film director Sudhir Mishra and Chinese director Fruit Chan.

Mira (Neha) comes from a very wealthy family, however, she wants to get married to Akash Sharma (Jatin Grewal), who is not so wealthy. Against the wishes of her mother (Neena Kulkarni) and brother, Mira gets married to Akash. Akash and Mira start a life full of love. Once Rahul (Yash Pathak) is born Mira's family forgives them. Akash has his own small business of travel. He is dedicated towards work but would not earn money by cheating. On Rahul's first birthday Akash gives Mira the permission of inviting her family. At the venue Mira's family comes along and Mira's brother (Manish Wadhwa) insults Akash to the core. This infuriates Akash and he hits Mira's brother. Mira asks Akash to ask forgiveness from his brother which the former refuses. Mira's family forcibly takes her away from Akash. She is also forced to leave behind her son Rahul. Akash and Mira get divorced in the court and fearing that Akash might take her life in absence of Rahul, Mira is forced to give the custody of her only child to Akash, until he is at least 5 years old.

Malika Modi lives a very wealthy lifestyle with her widowed dad in India where they own vast acres of land and businesses. Inkaar is the love story of Maya Luthra (Chitrangada Singh) and Rahul Verma (Arjun Rampal) set against the backdrop of sexual harassment. When misunderstandings are created between the two lovers Maya and her mentor Rahul, she files a case of sexual harassment against him. A committee is set up by the advertising agency they work in to investigate their case and find out the truth. Rahul denies that he ever had any such intentions to sexually harass Maya, but she insists that he makes her feel insecure and unsafe in her own office. The committee is unable to reach a clear conclusion as they do not know who to believe. The climax of the film brings an unexpected twist to the story, and in a final confrontation the two protagonists' love emerges victorious.
