Après ses études, Prasanna Vithanage s’intéresse au théâtre et met en scène des pièces de théâtre internationales. Il se tourne ensuite vers le cinéma et en 1992 signe son premier long métrage. Deux amis, Stanley et Manoj, rêvent d'ailleurs, d'occident, où ils pourront mener une vie meilleure que celle des quartiers très pauvres où ils vivent avec leurs familles. Ils souhaiteraient voyager en Allemagne afin de travailler et d'envoyer de l'argent à leurs familles. Malheureusement, l'ambassade refuse de leur délivrer un visa de séjour sous de futiles prétextes. Un jour, Stanley a un déclic : il tient en mains une affiche qui propose, dans le cadre de l'« amitié Allemagne-Asie », d'inviter une équipe srilankaise pour un tournoi de handball en Allemagne; ce sport étant totalement inconnu au Sri Lanka, c'est l'occasion de monter une équipe... Mais ces deux amis n'ont pas la moindre idée de ce qu'est le handball !
