Alessa Woo (Sook-Yin Lee), an art gallery employee in Toronto, has built an image as a rich heiress, but is in dire financial straits. She attempts to court rich men to feed her lifestyle, but is prone to changing partners. One day, talented aboriginal artist Ben Crowchild (Adam Beach) moves into the apartment next door, leading to the two sharing a bathroom. Angus McCormick, un adolescent de quinze ans, trouve et adopte un labrador retriever et l'appelle Yellow. Quelques jours plus tard, alors qu'ils voyagent en bateau le long de la côte de la Colombie-Britannique avec John McCormick, le père d'Angus, ils sont pris au piège par les eaux tumultueuses qui renversent leur bateau. John est sauvé par un hélicoptère, mais le jeune garçon et le chien se retrouvent bloqués sur la côte, en pleine nature canadienne. Les parents d'Angus font appel aux équipes de secours pour retrouver l'adolescent et son chien. Angus, éduqué par son père aux techniques de survie et assisté par son chien intelligent, tente d'attirer les sauveteurs et de survivre à travers la forêt, mais la faim, les températures glaciales, de violents orages et une meute de loups vont mettre à l'épreuve le courage et les compétences d'Angus et de Yellow pour survivre lors de leurs déplacements dans la forêt canadienne sauvage.

Stagecoach robber Bill Miner (Richard Farnsworth) is caught and sent to prison for 33 years. He is finally released in 1901. He wanders around, a man out of place in the new century, until he sees one of the first films, The Great Train Robbery, and is inspired to copy it in real life. After a couple unsuccessful attempts, he successfully robs a train and hides from the law in a mining town in British Columbia, becoming a respectable resident. There, he meets and falls in love with early feminist and photographer Katherine Flynn (Jackie Burroughs). He considers settling down with her, but one last robbery proves to be his downfall. True to his nickname, the Grey Fox escapes from prison as the ending credits start.
