Maxwell Reed (2 April 1919 – 16 August 1974) was a Northern Irish actor who became a matinee idol in several British films during the 1940s and 1950s. His early years included work as a merchant seaman and minor stage experience in Ireland and London, before being auditioned by Rank and joining 'The Company of Youth’ at the age of 27.
Reed moved to the U.S. in the late 1950s and portrayed the title role in the 1950s television series Captain David Grief, which was based on short stories by Jack London. He also made three films in the U.S. and appeared as a guest star in television series such as Bonanza, Perry Mason and Daniel Boone.
He was the first husband of actress Joan Collins, whom he allegedly raped, and married on 24 May 1952. The marriage ended in divorce in 1956.
He died from cancer, aged 55, in London.

Le prince troyen Pâris quitte son royaume pour porter un message de paix au roi Ménélas de Sparte. Mais, lors d'une tempête, le mât de son navire se brise et l'entraîne en tombant dans les flots. Ménélas voit aussitôt en lui un dangereux adversaire doublé d'un grand rival et le fait emprisonner. Hélène, surprise alors qu'elle préparait l'évasion de son amant, s'enfuit avec lui à Troie. Sa trahison, outre qu'elle bafoue Ménélas, déclenche immédiatement un énorme mouvement offensif des Grecs qui s'embarquent pour aller attaquer Troie.

1800. Un soir, à Guernesey, Gilliat et Willie, des pêcheurs devenus contrebandiers à cause des guerres napoléoniennes, aident la belle Drouette à rencontrer Lethierry, un aristocrate local, sans savoir qu'elle est en réalité une espionne anglaise. Sa mission est de se faire passer pour la Comtesse de Remuset, en prison à Londres, et d'obtenir des informations sur la marine française. Elle embarque pour la France sur leur bateau, leur faisant croire qu'elle veut sortir son frère des prisons françaises. Gilliat, la prenant pour une espionne française, va un moment contrarier ses plans, mais elle réussit finalement à rencontrer Fouché, en mission pour préparer la venue de Napoléon, et à entendre ce dernier discuter de ses plans avec ses officiers. Mais Fouché, méfiant, découvre qu'elle n'est pas la vraie comtesse et l'emprisonne. Prévenu par pigeon voyageur, Lethierry organise son évasion, mais son message est intercepté par Fouché qui la fait suivre. Gilliat et Willie arrivent à temps pour retenir Fouché et ses hommes et permettre ainsi à Drouette de s'échapper dans leur bateau. Une fois en sécurité, Gilliat et Drouette s'embrassent.

The film opens with ruthless killer The Dark Man (Maxwell Reed) murdering Mostyn, a petty criminal, at a farm house in a lonely wood. He shoots the taxi driver who drove him to Mostyn’s farm house, as he would be able to identify the Dark Man. But this murder is witnessed by a passerby: Molly (Natasha Parry), a young actress. The Dark Man now seeks to kill her as well. The police are called, and Inspector Viner (Edward Underdown) is put on the case. He soon develops romantic feelings for Molly. In the house three men had murdered a person with a knife and the corpse was lying on the floor. Pelly doesn't know that he is in the wrong house, and seeing that he is blind, the three murderers don't kill him. Pelly reported the incident to the police but the police were unable to find the dead body. When Pelly regains his eyesight after the operation he decides to solve the murder mystery.
