Raghu Ram (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a tourist guide in Jaipur who doubles up as a rental baraati for Goyal (Rishi Kapoor), a wedding planner. Dimple Chaddha (Parineeti Chopra) is a spoilt brat and only daughter of Sandeep Chaddha, the creator of "Chaddha Industries", a huge property company in Delhi. Her boyfriend is Sunny Singh (Ranveer Singh), a fitness instructor at a local gym. While travelling with Dimple on his bike, he stops at an old bungalow and proceeds to break in to harass the residents. Sunny tells a confused Dimple that the bungalow he vandalised belongs to his family and it had been illegally encroached upon by the tenants. His grandfather, father and mother have all died recently due to the stress of fighting the court case to remove tenants. The government however as ruled in favour of the tenants and he has to pay thousands in property tax to avoid being arrested.

Mann Kapoor (Emraan Hashmi), is an aspiring singer living a middle-class lifestyle in India. He is however unsuccessful in finding any recording labels to back his aspirations. Surinder Sahni, employé consciencieux de la Compagnie d'électricité du Punjab, est invité par un de ses anciens professeurs au mariage de sa fille, Taani. Le très raisonnable mais très ennuyeux Surinder est immédiatement conquis par la joie et la vivacité de la jeune femme. Apprenant la mort accidentelle du futur marié, le vieux professeur a une attaque cardiaque. À l'agonie et craignant de laisser sa fille seule, il fait promettre à Surinder et à Taani de se marier. Le mariage a lieu à la hâte, et le jeune couple s'installe dans la modeste maison de Surinder dans la banlieue d'Amritsar. Celui-ci, sans oser le lui dire, est très amoureux de sa jeune épouse mais n'est pas payé en retour.
