Laura Harrington (born April 29, 1958) is an American actress.
Harrington is perhaps best known for her role as the main character's sister in the 1993 film What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Her character was aged around 20 though the actress herself was 35 at the time. She has also had a prominent role in the 1986 film Maximum Overdrive, written and directed by horror novelist Stephen King, in which she played the love interest to Emilio Estevez's character.
She also had a supporting role in the 1997 film The Devil's Advocate, alongside Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. Harrington has also appeared in television series including Quantum Leap. She also co-wrote the script for the film The Moon and the Sun.

L'action du film se déroule dans la petite ville imaginaire d'Endora, dans l'Iowa, où Gilbert Grape passe ses journées à s'occuper d'Arnie, son petit frère souffrant de troubles mentaux. Sa mère, Bonnie, est atteinte d'obésité morbide après des années de dépression à la suite du suicide de son époux. Bonnie étant dans l'incapacité de prendre soin elle-même de ses enfants, c'est Gilbert qui a endossé la responsabilité de chef de famille. Il est commis dans un magasin d'alimentation, et passe beaucoup de temps à empêcher Arnie de grimper sur le réservoir d'eau de la ville pendant que ses sœurs Amy et Ellen s'occupent du ménage et de la cuisine. La relation entre les deux frères est faite d'attention et de protection (Gilbert interdit à quiconque de s'en prendre à Arnie). Un nouveau supermarché a également ouvert dans la ville, menaçant la petite épicerie où travaille Gilbert. Pour achever le tableau, Gilbert doit repousser les avances de Betty Carver, une femme mariée, mère de deux jeunes enfants.

Kurtwood Smith plays Myron Castleman, an everyman stuck in a loop that forces him to constantly relive the same hour of his life over and over, being the only person aware of this. During one loop, he discovers that a scientist named Nathan Rosenbluth has predicted an event that matches his experience. Castleman calls him and explains what is going on, however, Rosenbluth is highly skeptical of his claims. Over the next loops, Myron struggles to get into contact with Rosenbluth again, and in the process becomes frustrated to the point of screaming at his secretary and throwing his suitcase into traffic. Eventually, he does manage to talk to Rosenbluth, who initially dismisses Myron as crazy until Myron describes the transition as the scientist had predicted (including the phrase "Consciousness is an independent variable," which is central to Rosenbluth's theories). The professor sadly informs Castleman that there is nothing that can be done, causing Myron to become hysterical and shoot himself. There is a brief pause until Myron finds himself back at the beginning of the loop, realizing that he is trapped for eternity.

Alors que la Terre traverse la queue d'une comète, des machines prennent soudainement vie. Le chaos s'installe alors que des machines de toutes sortes commencent à attaquer les humains. À un relais routier juste à l'extérieur de Wilmington, en Caroline du Nord, un employé, Duncan Keller, est aveuglé après qu'une pompe à essence lui a pulvérisé du diesel dans les yeux. Une serveuse est blessée par un couteau électrique, et un jeu d'arcade électrocute un homme. L'employé et ex-taulard Bill Robinson soupçonne que quelque chose ne va pas. Pendant ce temps, lors d'un match de Little League Baseball, un distributeur de boissons tue l'entraîneur en tirant à bout portant dans son crâne. The film opens with 15-year-old Susan Bower on an alcohol and drug-fueled joyride with her boyfriend Ricky and two other friends, then intercuts to testimony from teenage and pre-teen addicts in a drug rehabilitation program run by Dr. Royce, who is then shown questioning the kids about the extent of their addictions. While foolishly attempting to drive with his eyes closed and both hands off the steering wheel, Ricky loses control of the car, causing it to skid on its side before overturning and landing all his passengers in the hospital (although ironically, Ricky himself emerges from the wreck unharmed). Once there, the presence of alcohol and drugs in Susan's bloodstream and urine is revealed, much to the shock of her parents (Helen and Frank, the latter a respected surgeon) and younger sister Kelly.
