Brenda Forbes (born 14 January 1909 — died 11 September 1996) was a British-born American actress of stage and screen.

Born as Dorothy Brenda Taylor in Wandsworth, London, the daughter of Ernest John and Ethel Louise Taylor. Her mother was actress Mary Forbes, and her elder brother was actor Ralph Forbes (né Ralph Taylor Forbes), she made her first film appearance in 1935 and her last in 1995. She appeared on Broadway between 1931 and 1985, mostly in revivals of classics.

The film opens in a New York police station as a pair of "low-lifes from Queens" named Johnny B. (John G. Brennan) and Kamal (Kamal Ahmed) are taken into police custody and interrogated by an NYPD detective named Robert Worzic (Brad Sullivan). Worzic demands to know exactly how the pair got into their situation, so Johnny explains that for the past twenty years, he and Kamal frequently entertained themselves by performing prank calls on the telephone. He brings up an early call where he got his neighbor Brett Weir, the local goody-two-shoes kid, in trouble with his mother by impersonating an angry citizen and claiming that Brett has been spitting and cursing.

Une jeune Américaine, Susan Dun, voyage en Angleterre et y tombe amoureuse d’un aristocrate, John Ashwood. Ils se marient mais leur lune de miel est interrompue d'emblée par la mobilisation générale de la Première Guerre mondiale. Ashwood est envoyé en France, ne peut revoir sa femme qu’une seule fois à l'occasion d'une permission et se fait tuer peu avant la fin de la guerre. Dans l’intervalle, Susan a donné naissance à un fils qu'elle élève avec sa belle-mère. L'une des scènes du film, qui dure à peine 30 s, montre des adolescents allemands venus dans le cadre d'un échange scolaire visiter la propriété des Ashwood. Dans leur conversation, ils laissent échapper une remarque sur l’opportunité d'utiliser les pelouses du parc pour faire atterrir des planeurs : ainsi, le scénario donne à entendre que ces jeunes sont impliqués dans une prospective nazie d'invasion de l'Angleterre.

In Great Britain, Vigil in the Night nurse Anne Lee (Carole Lombard) takes the blame for a fatal error made by her sister Lucy (Anne Shirley), also a nurse, and is forced to leave the hospital where they both work.
