Aaron Russo (February 14, 1943–August 24, 2007) was an American entertainment businessman, film producer and director, and political activist. He was best known for producing such movies as Trading Places, Wise Guys, and The Rose. Later in life, he created various Libertarian-leaning political documentaries including Mad as Hell and America: Freedom to Fascism. After a six-year battle with bladder cancer, Russo died on August 24, 2007.

In 1969 New York City, two hippies, Fred Wook (Eric Roberts) and Jesus Monteya (Cheech Marin), flee the US to avoid arrest by the FBI and hide out in the jungles of Central America. Fred is an idealist, working on an underground newspaper with his friend Sammy (Robert Carradine), while Jesus is a stoner whose brain has been fried after being given huge amounts of LSD by researchers (the theory being that acid and appropriate visual stimulation can turn pacifist hippies into committed soldiers; Jesus proves their failure by wishing them 'peace' as he leaves the lab.) The two flee the inner-city commune they are living in, leaving behind Sammy who feels it is important that he keep writing and publishing their message, and Fred's girlfriend, artist Petra (Julie Hagerty).

Eric Idle and Robert Wuhl star as a mismatched couple, Wendel and Lou in this mystery-comedy caper. Characters include a one-handed kingpin,a lawyer who suffers from dwarfism, and twin brothers, one a crazed photographer and the other a mild-mannered antique dealer. One of Wendel's many former foster parents, Mr Hu, dies, and his lawyer (the dwarf) gives Wendel his inheritance. A riddle. Wendel and Lou (his cello-playing best friend) soon realise the riddle isn't Hu's heirloom, just the key to finding Wendel's inheritance. But they are pursued by several unfavourable characters, almost all of whom want them dead.

Louis Winthorpe III est un jeune directeur chargé des investissements chez Duke & Duke, une puissante banque de Philadelphie. Billy Ray Valentine est un Noir combinard, mais fauché. À leur insu, tous deux vont faire l’objet d’un pari insensé de la part des patrons de Louis, les frères Mortimer et Randolph Duke, deux personnages arrogants. Ces derniers ont en effet des vues divergentes sur le rôle de l’acquis et de l’inné : Mortimer affirme que certaines personnes sont capables de réussir dans toutes les situations qui s’offrent à eux tandis que d’autres échoueront systématiquement ; Randolph croit pour sa part qu’un gagnant peut déchoir si son environnement ne lui est plus favorable et que celui qui a échoué pourrait réussir dans d’autres conditions. Pour se mettre d’accord, ils conviennent de réaliser une expérience grandeur nature, le vainqueur remportant leur « montant habituel ».

Plus intéressé par le profit que par la santé de la chanteuse, il l'en dissuade, mais Rose pense avoir rencontré l'amour en la personne de Houston Dyer et s'obstine. Le jour du concert, le plus important de sa carrière, elle choisit la scène plutôt que l'amour.
