The members of the Feathered Friends' Board of Birds (consisting of the Madame Chairbird, a sparrow, a turkey, a puffin, a robin, and an owl) discuss their situation about Big Bird and hope that they can find a bird family to put him with. The group's social worker Miss Finch (performed by Cheryl Wagner and voiced by Sally Kellerman) is sent to Sesame Street to find Big Bird a worthy bird family and bring him to the selected family. After leaving Sesame Street, New York City, New York, Miss Finch brings Big Bird to the fictional town of Oceanview, Illinois to live with a family of dodos. The dodos think exactly the same, even saying he should have a bird as a best friend instead of Mr. Snuffleupagus (who is currently watching over Big Bird's nest). This causes him much distress.

In the Louisiana countryside, Kermit the Frog begins his narration with Mordecai Sledge and Leroy the Donkey, as they approach their residence after stealing items in a box cart from a railroad guard. When they arrive, Mordecai finds the items are musical instruments, and blames Leroy for the items being worthless. He later scolds Leroy, and goes inside to find his shotgun so he can "retire" him. Startled by the gunshot, Leroy escapes from his owner with the tuba around his neck that Mordecai previously threw in a tree. Shortly after running, Leroy approaches Kermit who influences him to play the tuba, which inspires the donkey to be a traveling musician.

The story starts in New York City's Chinatown, where Big Bird peeks at an old scroll with a picture of a beautiful phoenix on it. The shopkeeper explains that the phoenix is magical and lives in China. To find the phoenix, Big Bird will first have to find the four places pictured on the scroll. Big Bird thinks, "Well, what a good thing it would be if a great big American bird went to meet that beautiful Chinese bird! I mean, she could tell me everything about China, and then I could come home and tell everybody here!" He sets out with Barkley on a boat and makes it to China.

Un jour de chasse, Bugs est poursuivi par les chiens d'Elmer. Ils finissent par coincer le lapin près d'un arbre, mais ignorent que le rusé léporidé imite l'un d'eux (il leur dit être Rintintin). Elmer arrive avec son fusil et met en joue Bugs. Ce dernier est sauvé in extremis lorsque Elmer apprend par scooter-express qu'il hérite de 3 000 000 $ de son oncle Louie. Elmer peut hériter à une condition : ne pas blesser les animaux, surtout les lapins. En rentrant chez lui, il remarque Bugs en train de se doucher, chantant Angel in Disguise, qui n'en sort momentanément que pour trouver le bon ton à l'aide du piano de la maison. Elmer tente de déloger Bugs de la baignoire, mais le lapin lui bouche son fusil avec la bonde. Puis il lui rappelle, par une feuille écrite, de penser à son oncle.
